Edward, Prince of Wales (1330-1376) was popularly known as the Black Prince, apparently because of his reputation for riding into battle in jet black armour. However, as can be seen from this image, taken from a contemporary source, the rumour was inaccurate! He was a colourful chap, obviously, which makes this wallhanging very interesting to stitch in needlepoint.
